Magnum Solution Used In New DVDR-100xx Records Digital Broadcasts Onto DVD

2006 INTERNATIONAL CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW-LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5, 2006 -- Magnum Semiconductor announced today that its DVD recording chipset is used in the successful Mustek DVDR-100xx product, now on sale in the U.K. and other parts of Europe. This new product records digital video broadcast, as well as the more typical analog broadcasts and DV (digital video) camcorder material.

“Magnum Semiconductor is very proud to be Mustek’s chip supplier on this ground-breaking product,” said Brian Heuckroth, vice president of marketing for Magnum Semiconductor. “Mustek and Magnum have a history of innovation spanning the exciting, formative years in the mass-market DVD recorder industry and we are looking forward to the exciting new products being introduced into this burgeoning market.”

“Magnum has supported Mustek for years in its drive to offer innovative, compelling DVD recorder products at market-leading prices,” states Roger Lai, vice president of sales and marketing for Mustek. “Europe is a major market for Mustek and the transition to digital broadcast has created a tremendous opportunity for us. We rely on Magnum to provide timely, comprehensive and cost-effective support for our programs, since rapid deployment is a key to market success in this industry.”

European countries have been migrating steadily from analog terrestrial broadcasts into digital broadcasts, as the benefits of increased channel bandwidth, better reception and interactive services propel the market’s adoption of digital technology.

According to Michelle Abraham, principal analyst at In-Stat, “Digital broadcast tuners are clearly the wave of the future for European products, with greater than 23% digital terrestrial household penetration in the U.K. already. We believe that DVD product companies must rapidly make the transition to incorporate digital broadcasting in order to make the most of this new opportunity.”
