Magnum Semiconductor Introduces Single-Chip Solutions for Portable Media Recorders

MS9330 and MS9430 System-on-a-Chip A/V Codecs Integrate Power Management and System Functions for DVD, Hard Disk and Flash Based Portable Video Recorders

2007 Consumer Electronics Show, Las Vegas, Nev., Jan. 8, 2007 – Magnum Semiconductor (Milpitas, CA) today announced the new MS9330 and MS9430 single-chip Codec and system controllers for portable video recorders. These two highly integrated multi-processor SOCs offer small size, excellent audio/video performance, full features and low power, making them ideal solutions for battery-operated portable media recorders that use DVDs, hard disk drives, and / or flash memory.

“With the introduction of these two new chips, Magnum Semiconductor has extended our flagship MS9300 and MS9400 product families to provide solutions that are specifically targeted for portable audio/video applications,” said Jack Guedj, president and chief executive officer of Magnum Semiconductor. “We have developed these new chips for consumer products like portable media recorders, where the highest levels of features and performance are demanded, along with small size, long battery life, and low cost.”

The MS9330 integrates a single ATAPI memory controller, and is optimized for personal video recorders with a single DVD drive, hard disk, or flash memory. The

MS9430 has two ATAPI controllers, allowing the development of systems with multiple storage devices. In addition the MS9430 provides for full duplex operation, playing A/V contents from one memory, at the same time that it records to the other.

Both products feature low power operation, and multiple power-saving modes. Magnum provides a complete software suite for the MS9330 and MS9430, including operating system, drivers, file system, and APIs (advanced programming interfaces) for easy customization. Reference applications software includes DVD authoring with auto-chaptering, patent-pending power-fail recovery, and ripping software to convert CD audio into MP3 files. The MS9330 and MS9430 include optical super multi-format capability, reading and writing to DVD + or – R, + or – RW, and –RAM media.

As with all members of the MS9300 and MS9400 family, the new chips incorporate high-performance 108MHz video DACs and Diagonally Enhanced Picture Formatting (DEPF) for improved visual quality, advanced features, and direct digital TV (DTV) tuner support for Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T).

The MS9330 and MS9430 both come in a 441 ball plastic BGA package that measures 17mm by 17mm. They are priced at $20, in OEM quantities. Both parts are available now.
